The Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier

The Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier was built in 1997 to protect Rotterdam, which is 90% below sea level. The Delta Works was originally started following the North Sea flood of 1953 that killed over 1,800 people. The barrier is almost as long as the height of the Eiffel Tower and weighs four times as much, which makes it one of the largest moving structures on the planet as much.
